|The Race to the Clouds...|
First run in 1916, the hill climb up America's mountain is the second oldest race in the country, attracting race teams from all over the world. The 12.42 mile course starts at an elevation of 9,390 feet and finishes at 14,100 feet. The drivers and their crews are challenged by the thin air that slows reflexes and saps the engines of their power. Certainly all of Cascade will be rooting for their local resident, Ralph Murdock, who won his division in 2011. Also of note this year is the electric car entered by last year's record-setting driver Nobuhiro Tajima.
Not just for racing fans, the week leading up to the event offers something for everyone. Don't miss Fan Fest on Friday, July 6 in downtown Colorado Springs. This popular event will feature beer gardens, live entertainment, the Denver Broncos cheerleaders and, perhaps, the chance to spot your favorite driver.
The Pikes Peak area offers a wide range of activities, including hiking, fishing, horseback riding, golfing, fine dining and shopping, so pack up the family and make your plans to join in the excitement and festivities.
